About
About Tumaco–La Tolita
Tumaco–La Tolita is the classic Late Formative Pacific lowland tradition spanning the Colombia–Ecuador border from Nariño (Tumaco) to Esmeraldas (Isla La Tolita / Pampa de Oro) at 5 m in mangrove–estuary. Centered on the 80-ha mound-island of La Tolita (Pampa de Oro), with 40 earthen mounds (6m high), ballcourt, and mound-plaza alignments (600 BCE–400 CE), its artisans pioneered lost-wax platinum–gold metallurgy, intricate ceramic figurines (the famed Tolita coquero, were-jaguar transformatives) and feasting canals. NOAA Lidar + Ule/Fernández mining surveys show a dispersed wetland city linking the Cauca mountains to the sea.
