About Utica
Traditionally 1101 BCE Tyrian foundation (Pliny) predating Carthage, Utica was Carthaginian capital's rival port, then Roman capital of Africa Province after 146 BCE until Augustus moved capital to Carthage. Now 12 km inland due to wadi Majerda siltation that choked harbour, vividly illustrating silting landscapes. Remains: Punic tophet deposits, amphitheatre, vast baths and cisterns (5,000 m³), Casa della Cascata with 212 m² waterfall mosaic + aviary, House of Hirondelles, 2nd-c theatre, aqueduct. Cato the Younger suicide here 46 BCE after Thapsus. 70 ha site largely unpublished.
