About
About Ancient City of Vaishali
Capital of the Vajji (Vriji) confederacy and world's first republican state (c.600 BCE), where Buddha delivered his last sermon and Licchavis enshrined his relics in the earliest known stupa (c.483 BCE). Ashoka crowned it with a 18.3 m monolithic lion pillar (250 BCE) bearing edict, excavated at Kolhua mound; adjacent Raja-Vishala-ka-Garh is 1 km citadel mound with 4.2 m rampart and moat, and Kutagarasala monastery where Second Buddhist Council convened (383 BCE).
Why it mattersEarliest republican governance in Asia; earliest stupa and Ashokan pillar pair keystone for Buddhist chronology.
