About

About Vasu Vihara

Vasu Vihara is a 4th–7th century Gupta-period Buddhist monastery 6 km southwest of Mahasthangarh, a 58×45 m complex with 26 cells around a rectangular court and a central apsidal chaitya (12×18 m). Excavated by P.C. Das (1973–79), it shows Gupta brick monastery architecture with lime-plastered walls, meditation cells with raised platforms, and a votive stupa cluster containing Gupta gold coins and Khadgadyota copper plates. The site is identified with Xuanzang's Po-shi-po monastery (7th century) and bridges the Mahasthangarh urban core to its monastic periphery, revealing early Buddhist urbanism in Pundranagara.

Why it mattersEarly Gupta monastery linking Mahasthangarh urbanism to monastic hinterland; Xuanzang toponym anchor.
