About

About Wadi al-Qattafi Kite Field (Three-Arm Wadi System)

Complex wadi (680 m) with three subparallel arms (North, Central, South Qattafi) merging 5 km north of Qa al-Qattafi playa (10 km²), 60 km east-southeast of Azraq oasis and 60 km west of Wisad Pools. Basalt-capped mesas rise 40-60 m above wadi bed; on and around mesas are 38 desert kites (densest Black Desert concentration) plus 120 burial mounds, tower tombs, wheels, and dwellings. Kites cluster along eastern slopes of mesas—main Qattafi channel runs immediately east, so guiding walls exploit mesa edges to block escape.

Wall lengths 400-1200 m, pens 20-45 m, often paired with adjacent 'wheel' cult sites. Hill & Rowan attribute to Late Neolithic–Chalcolithic (6500-4000 BCE); projectile points Ghassulian. Qa al-Qattafi playa pollen shows Early Holocene lake 4 m deep, explaining kite concentration at water. 1 km walls—the longest in Jordan.

Why it mattersDensest kite concentration in Levant (38) + mesa-edge locational rule; playa-lake paleoenvironment tie.
