About

About Waqrapukara

Waqrapukara (Quechua waqra horn + pukara fortress) is a spectacular condor-shaped citadel perched at 4,110 m on the Apurímac canyon rim near Pomacanchi, Cusco. Built by the Kana-Colla and monumentalized by the Inca under Wayna Qhapaq, its double-walled terrace system crowns a natural horn-shaped limestone crag overlooking the Pomacanchi plain and condor flyway. The lower enclosure houses Intihuatana-like niches and a trapezoidal double-jamb gate aligned to the June solstice sunrise over Ausangate; the upper condor-head platform incorporates a natural cave with Inca stonework that frames the Milky Way's dark-cloud llama.

Chroniclers associate the site with the royal cult of Wiraqocha and the defense of the Qollasuyu road.
