About
About Willkawaín (Wilkawain) — Wari-Rucu Pyramid Temple (Caleyón de Huaylas, Ancash, Peru)
Three-storey subterranean-tower pyramid-mausoleum (12 m high, 18x18 m square) of Recuay (Pashash) then Wari-Tiwanaku horizon (600–800 CE) in Callejón de Huaylas at 3400 m, built of dressed white granite megaliths with interior labyrinthine chambers, ventilation shafts and corbel vaults reminiscent of Chavín. Inner burial galleries contain shaft tombs and mummy niches (unchus). Important Wari northern enclave with aqueduct and terraces; Tello and Bennett excavations show hybrid Recuay-Wari stonework superior to highland contemporary. Adjacent Ichic Willkawain 1 km south is smaller replica.
Why it mattersFinest Wari mortuary architecture outside Ayacucho basin; links highland Recuay megaliths with Wari imperialism.
