About Wonderwerk Cave — Acheulean to Later Stone Age
Wonderwerk Cave is the 140 m phreatic tube on Kuruman Hills with 2 Ma to 14 ka stratigraphy spanning Oldowan to Late Stone Age and earliest fire (1 Ma ash, burnt bone). Excavation 1 shows Acheulean handaxes (1.6 Ma), Fauresmith, MSA and LSA, with macro-botanical record 2 Ma–14 ka. Lower levels have 1 Ma in-situ hearth ash (Berna et al. PNAS). 2018 Report at 27°50′47″S 23°33′13″E. Northern Cape's largest cave (140×11–24 m, 10 m high) in Ghaap dolomite.
Why it mattersLongest continuous cave sequence in southern Africa; earliest fire control evidence and Oldowan at 2 Ma.
