About
About Yaxchilán — Structure 33 Pyramid and Great Plaza (Chiapas, Mexico)
Spectacular Classic Maya riverine city-state on Usumacinta south bank (350–800 CE), rival of Piedras Negras, known for lintel carvings of bloodletting. Structure 33 crowns the Great Acropolis terrace 40 m above Plaza (30x20 m base, 15 m high pyramid plus 12 m roof comb — Petén style) with single vaulted chamber and superb carved lintels (Lady Xook pulling thorn rope). Its hill-top placement gives false pyramid exaggeration; adjacent Structure 20 is triadic. Carvings of Bird Jaguar IV consecration; Maler-Tate excavations 1881–present.
Why it mattersPremier Usumacinta art style; lintels corpus key to Maya epigraphy; hilltop acropolis typifies river fortress urbanism.
