About Akoris — Northern Quarry Valley Harbour at Tihna North
Northern quarry valley harbour of Akoris, 780 m north of the central rock-cut terrace, where a limestone wadi mouth provided a natural slipway 28 m long for hauling 3-ton limestone blocks to Nile barges, now buried 2–4 m under wadi alluvium. The valley floor is paved with limestone crusher waste (flakes) 0.5 m thick with wedge slots marking 4th c. CE Roman quarry faces 14 m high. A silted wadi canal 9 m wide connects the valley to the Nile; its banks retain limestone workers' huts (6 rooms) with Demotic ostraka listing block dimensions for Antinoopolis column drums. The valley silted after quarry exhaustion 500 CE and wadi flash diverted by modern pumping.
Why it mattersOnly Roman column-drum quarry slipway preserved; Demotic ostraka give block metrology for Antinoopolis architecture; quarry-to-harbour chain.
