About

About Altyn-Depe (Altyn Tepe)

Middle–Late Chalcolithic to Early Bronze oasis town (c.3200–2000 BCE, Namazga II–IV) between Namazga and the Karakum — 26 ha walled town famous for its Ziggurat-like mudbrick 'altar' complex (massive 34×22 m stepped altar of mudbrick with fire hearth), excavated 1965–85 by Masson. Altyn-Depe yielded Namazga III–IV polychrome, terracotta figurines (mother goddess), compartmented stamp seals and early proto-writing (piktograms on sherds), copper smelting and bead workshops; demonstrates Namazga transitional monumental architecture before Namazga VI mega-town and Gonur BMAC of Murghab, with elite burial containing gold diadem.

Why it mattersOnly Namazga stepped altar — proto-ziggurat 1000 years before Mesopotamian ziggurats, proving Central Asian monumental ritual independent of Iran; seals show Elamite contact.
