About

About Apollonia–Arsuf – Crusader Harbour Submerged Quays

Apollonia (Arsuf) – Persian-founded Phoenician harbour (6th c. BCE), Hellenistic Apollonia, Roman Sozousa, Crusader Arsuf with formidable clifftop fortress (1241 CE). Its twin harbours: the northern Roman quay (ashlar, concrete) and the southern Crusader mole (kurkar sandstone) now lie submerged 1–3 m due to 2 m relative sea-level rise + Nile sand longshore drift collapse after Aswan dam. IAA surveys mapped a 40 m submerged kurkar breakwater, mooring rings and 12th c. shipwreck ballast 200 m offshore. The Crusader harbour was scuttled 1265 by Baibars; cliff erosion exposes harbour mud sequence.

Why it mattersOnly Levantine harbour preserving superposition of Persian, Roman and Crusader harbour works in 1–3 m subtidal zone; documents Nile sand supply collapse post-Aswan.
