About

About Bata — Gelendzhik Bay Northern Cape Anchorage

Northern reef anchorage traditionally linked to Bata's chora on Gelendzhik Bay, a 90-m natural reef enhanced with rock-cut moorings at 4–6 m depth on Cape Pashennaya (Tolsty). The reef carries 8 mooring cuttings and a scatter of Archaic–Classical sherds (Ionian cups) marking a seasonal fishing roadstead before Gelendzhik's formal foundation as Toricos. The anchorage served Sindian cabotage linking Bata (Novorossiysk) to Toricos (Gelendzhik), two Bosporan outposts 25 km apart, and was sheltered from southerly gales by the cape. Post-Classical rise submerged the reef crest from wading to 4 m. Local fishers still call the reef 'Batsky Kamen' (Bata Stone).

Why it mattersLinks Bata (Novorossiysk) and Toricos (Gelendzhik) as 25 km cabotage pair; Batsky Kamen toponym preserves memory.
