About Toricos — Southern Harbour at Toretae Cape
Southern harbour of Toricos, port of the Toretae tribe (Maeotian) Hellenized under Bosporus, at Gelendzhik's Tonkiy Cape now 2–4 m under Gelendzhik Bay south bay. The harbour features a 38-m rubble mole at 3 m depth with an ashlar bollard, and a rock-cut slipway 18 m long for hauling galleys, analogous to Phaselis. 12) notes Toretae pirates sheltered there. The mole's pottery dates 480–350 BCE (Ionian and Early Black-figure), with Roman repair (2nd c.
CE mortar). Gelendzhik resort seawall 1970s partially buried the lee side under rip-rap, but 2019 dive cleared 12 m of quay face. The bay's excellent shelter made Toricos a Bosporan fleet wintering harbour.
Why it mattersOnly Toretae tribal harbour with galley slipway — indigenous Maeotian Hellenization model; Ps.Skylax–Strabo textual match.
