About
About Becán
Major Río Bec–Chenés fortified Maya capital surrounded by unique 2 km-long, 16 m-wide, 5 m-deep continuous ditch-moat (English ‘Be’ecs ditch’) enclosing 25 ha core – only fully ditched major Maya city – with pyramidal towers, causeways and 20 major structures. Structure IX (30 m high pyramid) and Structure X with twin towers (Chenés facades) rise over moat. Classic 550–1200 CE; allied to both Calakmul and Río Bec spheres. Moat function debated (defensive vs water vs drainage). INAH 1969–1979 excavations by David Webster.
Why it mattersOnly fully ditch-enclosed large Maya city – test of fortification vs water-management theories in Classic Maya Lowlands.

Mysteries & theories
Mysteries
- 01Why completely encircle city with moat when other Calakmul-region cities are open – siege fear vs water symbolism
- 02Why Río Bec towers have fake non-climbable stairs
Theories
- 01Moat as defensive quarantine after 735 Calakmul collapse made region contested; ditch labor signals elite coercion
- 02Río Bec faux-pyramids as theatrical skyline – symbolic rather than functional stair
Theories are interpretations, not findings. The seal above tells you how much scholarly weight the place carries.
