About Becan Twin-Tower Pyramid (Structure VIII)
Largest moated Maya city (550 BCE–1000 CE, peak 600–800 CE) 5.75 ha enclosed by artificial ditch and rampart (1900 m perimeter moat) with 7 entrances: Structure VIII twin-tower pyramid 32 m high east side of central plaza with two hollow towers and false stairways, temple on top. Structure I also twin-tower north. Fortified capital of Becán polity controlling Rio Bec region. Excavated Ruppert-Dennison 1934, Thomas 1970s Tulane, INAH. Moat is earliest large earthwork in Maya area (functional vs symbolic debate).
Why it mattersOnly moated Maya capital; earliest Maya earthwork moat; twin-tower pyramid after Becán defines Rio Bec style distribution from Becán core.
