About
About Besnagar Vidisha Ancient City
Besnagar Vidisha Ancient City — capital of Dasharna janapada and Sunga Sungabhadra (3rd c BCE–5th c CE) on Betwa-Bes confluence 3 km north of Vidisha, excavated 1913–15 by Marshall–Lake and 1963–64 by M.D. Khare (ASI). Besnagar revealed Sunga–Satavahana urban layers: fortified rampart, terracotta, punch-marked coins, and Heliodorus Garuda pillar (see separate). Two ashoka pillars, Yakshi statues, and Buddha balustrade show Mauryan to Gupta continuity. Vidisha is Puranic Besnagar linking Sanchi Buddhist circuit.
