About Chemtou (Simitthus)
World-source of imperial giallo antico (marmor numidicum) – the buttery yellow brecciated marble coveted by Rome from Augustus to Byzantium. German Archaeological Institute exposed 3 km industrial landscape: 1,200 m long quarry face on Djebel Chemtou 80 m high with extraction ramps still scored 2 m grooves, work camps, slave cemetery, loading ramp to Medjerda river for shipping to Utica harbour, and Roman town with bridge over Oued Medjerda (Tiberius 30 m arch), theatre cut into quarry waste, forum. Museum on site holds 7-ton monolith. Numidian royal sanctuary atop Djebel Bou Rfifa. Yellow marble appears in Pantheon and Hagia Sophia.
Why it mattersOnly imperial marble quarry fully excavated; documents slave labour, logistics, and trade from pit to imperial building.
