About

About Choapa Pampa Geoglyphs (Salamanca–Los Vilos Corridor)

Southernmost Chilean geoglyph field (720 m) on semi-arid pampa mesa 18 km NW of Salamanca (Choapa Province), 62 km inland from Los Vilos coast. 12 low-relief cleared figures 15-28 m: rounded anthropomorphs, 20 m camelids, and 50-90 m sinuous lines—stylistically transitional between northern Atacama desert clearing and southern Diaguita rock-art. Figures lie on Pleistocene terrace with thin loess pavement; technique is shallow scrape exposing caliche nodules rather than salar crust.

Associated with El Molle–Las Ánimas–Diaguita sequence (400 BCE–1400 CE) and the Choapa–Chalinga trans-Andean pass to Argentina (Inca road 4 km south). Fog oasis (camanchaca) moisture bands threaten crispness. Only semiarid geoglyphs south of Copiapó, demonstrating 1,600 km geoglyph tradition continuity.

Why it mattersSouthernmost Atacama-style geoglyphs (31°S); Diaguita–El Molle continuity over 1,600 km.
