About

About Negev Desert Kites – Har Harif & Avdat

Negev Highlands counterpart to Jordan's harra kites: 100+ meticulously built funnels on Har Harif plateau and craters where converging stone walls up to 600 m long funnel ibex and gazelle into 20-m stone-walled enclosure pits (animals kept alive). Dated 7000–3000 BCE via flint typology and OSL, they exploit topography rather than lava—low 30-cm walls invisible to prey until trap closed by brush. Associated hunting blinds, rock engravings of ibex drives and nearby Yem Saharonim copper mines reveal kite hunters who transitioned to pastoralists; Negev overfits the Levantine kite province southward, implying annual aggregation around Ramadan pools.

Why it mattersSouthernmost Levantine kite province; demonstrates adaptation of harra technique to limestone Negev without basalt and proves live-storage hunting economy enabling semi-sedentism.

Mysteries & theories

Mysteries

  1. 01Whether Negev kites shifted from kill to live-storage as pastoralism emerged
  2. 02Variability in pit number—single vs multi-star meaning seasons?

Theories

  1. 01Live-pen as proto-pastoral herd accumulation—'hunting towards herding'
  2. 02Kite proximity to water as seasonal aggregation and exchange locus

Theories are interpretations, not findings. The seal above tells you how much scholarly weight the place carries.
