About
About Negev Central Desert Kites - Mitzpe Ramon
Highland kite complex of 11 flint-limestone desert kites on the Negev plateau rim above the 500-m deep Ramon Crater, the best-preserved Sinai-Negev kite province. 8-m flint walls converging to 3 oval cells; OSL under wall 4100-2900 BCE ties to Timnian and Early Bronze cultures. Unlike eastern harra mega-kites, Negev kites are miniaturized for ibex and Dorcas gazelle on rugged crater rim terrain; walls incorporate natural flint pavement edge requiring minimal construction effort.
The Mitzpe Ramon field is the only kite landscape with direct Nabataean reuse: Nabataean wine-press installations cut two kite cells (2nd c. CE), showing agricultural conversion of hunting architecture.
Why it mattersMiniaturized crater-rim kite adaptation and Nabataean reuse demonstrates 3000-year landscape palimpsest from hunting to viticulture at arid margin.
