About Elephantine Island Small Step Pyramid — Aswan
Small step pyramid at extreme southern end of Elephantine Island, Aswan: 11.5 m base, three steps, now 5 m ruin of granite rubble and limestone casing traces. Excavated by Günter Dreyer and Werner Kaiser (German Archaeological Institute, 1980–98) on granite outcrop above Old Kingdom town stratigraphy. Island's oldest monumental architecture, contemporary with early Dynastic fortress. Part of Huni/Sneferu provincial pyramid network. Interpretation as symbol of royal dominion at Egypt's southern border and possible bench mark for Nile inundation.
