About Pyramid of Elephantine
Small step pyramid on Elephantine Island (Aswan) of the seven provincial small step pyramids attributed to Huni (3rd Dynasty, c. 2630 BCE) along Nile from Athribis to Elephantine. Base 18.46 m square, 3 steps preserved to 5.1 m (originally ~10–12 m), built of granite rubble from island quarries with mud mortar, no chamber, oriented to cardinal points. Excavated by Henri Gauthier 1909 and Günter Dreyer / German Archaeological Institute. Function debated as cenotaph, territorial marker, or primitive bench mark for royal power projection.
Why it mattersSouthernmost Huni pyramid defines Old Kingdom southern frontier; granite rubble adaption to island material contrasts northern limestone versions.
