About

About Gath (Tell es-Safi) – Philistine Capital Harbour Inland Port

Gath (Tell es-Safi) – Philistine pentapolis capital (Goliath hometown, 1 Samuel 17), Canaanite–Philistine–Judahite fortress whose 'harbour' was an Elah River (Nahal Elah) canal port 3 km north, connecting to Ashkelon via Lachish River barge when winter torrents flowed. Maeir's excavations (1996–) uncovered 9th c. BCE Philistine harbour road, Iron IIB city wall (Hazael's siege 835 BCE), and Elah canal mud with Philistine Bichrome sherds at –1 m 2 km north of tell. The 'Goliath shard' (Proto-Canaanite) and olive press complex anchor the port's agricultural export. The Elah canal silted after Judahite destruction 712 BCE.

Why it mattersOnly Philistine pentapolis capital preserving intact Elah canal harbour-mud and Hazael siege destruction horizon (835 BCE); Goliath shard locus.
