About
About Gran Vilaya – Chachapoya Citadel Network
Vast Chachapoya hilltop conurbation (800–1470 CE, Inca conquest 1470) 7 km north of Kuelap, comprising 30+ registered citadels on 15 km2 ridge: massive circular stone houses 10 m diameter with frieze-decorated sunken floors, plaza groups, fortified cliff-edge walls 5 m high and karst cave mausoleums (Purunllacta de Solmal, Bui). Schjellerup 1990s mapped 23 major sites (Ensamble de Ollape, Pirquilla, La Pirca, Retama) within single intervisible defensive network holding 5,000+ houses; Inca occupation overlay with kancha. Largest Chachapoya settlement system.
Why it mattersLargest Chachapoya settlement system surpassing Kuelap in total area; demonstrates Chachapoya urban hierarchy and Inca incorporation strategy without wholesale destruction.
