About
About Hermonassa — Northern Lagoon Harbour in Taman Bay
Northern lagoon harbour of Hermonassa (later Tmutarakan), Mytilenean colony founded c. 5–3 m under Taman Bay's northern lagoon behind a barrier spit. 7 m lagoon mud. The lagoon's closure from open bay (13th c. spit) sealed the harbour basin, preserving Classical–Byzantine stratigraphy: Ionian cups, Bosporan coins, Byzantine amphorae and Tmutarakan Rus pottery stacked vertically. 1-m-thick harbour fill with alternating marine and brackish layers indicating progressive enclosure rather than catastrophic submergence.
Why it mattersOnly Bosporan lagoon harbour with preserved timber causeway; Tmutarakan Rus layer links Greek to medieval continuity; lagoon enclosure sequence is Holocene archive.
