About

About Phanagoria — Sennoy Southeast Submerged Street Grid

8 m of sandy silt. Discovered 2011–2018 by Russian Academy of Sciences Taman Expedition side-scan sonar and diver ground-truth: limestone wall socles, tile collapse, and amphora pavements align with Classical–Hellenistic upper city orientation (N12°E). The grid abruptly terminates at a rubble mole interpreted as a Hellenistic quay (c. 300–150 BCE) built of re-used 6th–5th c. ashlar. 2 m since antiquity) plus Taman trough subsidence drowned this sector progressively from the 2nd c.

CE; medieval curtains above the scarp collapsed onto the submerged streets. Stratified deposits include Bosporan copper and Sinopean amphorae, confirming the area as artisan quarter (bronze slag, kiln wasters) rather than monumental centre.

Why it mattersOnly in-situ Archaic–Hellenistic street grid preserved underwater on Taman Peninsula; proves Phanagoria lower town was planned, not ad hoc harbour sprawl. Harbour mole phasing informs Bosporan sea-level curve.

Mysteries & theories

Mysteries

  1. 01Whether SE grid served specifically as fish-salting quarter (cetariae?) vs general artisan
  2. 02Precise subsidence rate post-2nd c. CE

Theories

  1. 01Progressive subsidence of Taman trough drowned city by 1–2 mm/yr, not a single co-seismic event — supported by gradual ceramic terminus

Theories are interpretations, not findings. The seal above tells you how much scholarly weight the place carries.
