About

About Phanagoria — Tuzla Spit Western Anchorage (Taman Peninsula)

Western anchorage sector of Phanagoria opposite Tuzla Spit, where the western roadstead and fish-salting quarter (cetrae) now lies 2–4 m under Taman Bay silts. Distinct from the eastern lobe and central lower town already in database, this western cove preserves timber pile jetties, Dressel 1 amphora dumps and a rubble breakwater traced 220 m offshore by 2014–2019 University of Moscow side-scan sonar to –4 m. Founded by Teian colonists 543 BCE, western suburb served Bosporan Asian capital's western grain fleets; transgression drowned it c. 3rd–6th c. CE. Excavations show insula foundations, salting vats and a mid-1st c. BCE warship nail scatter indicating harbour battle debris.

Why it mattersWestern anchorage completes tripartite Phanagoria harbour model (central, eastern, western); timber pile dates calibrate Taman Bay relative sea-level curve and Bosporan fish-salting economy.
