About Huaca La Florida

Earliest classic U-shaped ceremonial pyramid in Andes (Initial Period c.1500 BCE, but occupation 2200 BCE), 11 km inland in lower Rímac Valley north bank (Rímac District, Lima). Massive mound 17 m high main pyramid with two projecting lateral arms 500 m long, 4 m high, forming 1 ha open plaza (U open east). One of oldest U-temples proving emergence of coastal monumentality before Chavín. Excavated 1950s by Thomas Patterson and Louis Stumer who documented Initial Period ceramics and platform sequence.

Why it mattersProves large-scale monumentality at 1500 BCE coastal Peru before Chavín and Central Andes highland; U-plaza ritual model precursor to Garagay/Chavín sunken courts.
