About
About Jericho–Wadi Qelt Herodian Aqueduct System (Judean Desert, Palestine)
Desert-palace hydraulic lifeline: 20 km of plastered aqueducts (Ein Farah, Ein Qelt, Ein el-Auja) cascading 400 m down the Judean Desert Wadi Qelt gorge (Nahal Prat) to Herod the Great's third palace (Winter Palaces at Tulul Abu al-Alayiq) and the Jericho date–balsam oasis, plus Hasmonean Na'aran aqueduct reused. 9-m wide opus signinum channels on Wadi Qelt cliff aqueduct bridges (up to 12 m high) and rock-cut tunnels 60 m long circumventing the gorge.
Netzer 1970s–90s excavated Herodian swimming pools (largest 90 x 42 m) fed by the aqueduct; 14C on mortar 30 BCE capstone. Demonstrates Herodian desert-paradise hydropolitics — turning the driest Jerusalem fringe (400 m below sea-level) into opulent gardens and balsam plantations rivaling Ptolemaic economy.
Why it mattersParadigm of Herodian desert hydraulic stagecraft — informs Qumran and Masada water debates.
