About
About Kalaly-Gyr 1
Khorezmian–Kangju frontier fortress (c.5–4 c. BCE, Achaemenid period) in the southern Kyzylkum at Kalaly-Gyr, Karakalpakstan — large rectangular fort 500×350 m with 12 bastions, associated with Kalaly-Gyr 2 (temple complex). Excavated 1939–80s by Tolstov & Vorobyeva, Kalaly-Gyr 1 yielded Achaemenid-style column bases, earliest Khorezmian ceramics (Kalaly phase), and arrowhead hoard indicating Achaemenid–Khorezm confrontation. Part of Khorezm's southern limes against Saka and Achaemenid Persia, with adjacent Kalaly-Gyr 2 fire temple showing Zoroastrian early monumentalization.
Why it mattersSouthernmost Khorezm fortress — defines Achaemenid–Khorezm frontier and earliest Khorezmian monumental temple.
