About Kallanai North Channel — Grand Anicut Kaveri North Branch
818 across the Kaveri 15 km NE Trichy splitting Kaveri into Kollidam north and Kaveri south to protect Thanjavur delta. 4-m unhewn stone dam with clay core; north channel controls Kollidam with 12 under-sluice vents still manually operated, British Cotton 1804 arches raising height 2 m and modern Kollidam barrage downstream (1960s). Irrigates 400,000 ha Thanjavur. UNESCO Tentative 2014. Unlike earlier Kallanai south, north channel shows 1800-yr masonry continuity with colonial engineering overlay and ongoing farmer sluice operation.
