About

About Kallanai Grand Anicut East Channel

East distributary channel 800 m east of the 329-m Kallanai (Grand Anicut) main dam (c.100 CE Karikala Chola), controlling the Vennar–Vettar eastward offtakes that watered the Chola delta's richest rice zone. The 180-m east channel regulator with 9 sluices (granite lintel, later Chola 11th c. and Vijayanagara 15th c. repairs) diverted Kaveri flood into the Kollidam-avoidance east delta, preserving the main anicut's flow division proven by Srinivasan 1968 stratigraphy distinguishing Chola core from medieval refacing. Still operational; APWWS survey 2011 documented 1.2-m Chola granite base course.

Why it mattersEastern wing of world's oldest operational anicut, vital for Chola delta east irrigation and Chola→Vijayanagara continuity.
