About Khettaras of Figuig Oasis (Figuig Khettara Network)
High Atlas foothill khettara (Moroccan qanat) network at Figuig oasis (890 m) on Morocco-Algeria border, southeastern Atlas piedmont beneath Jbel Haimeur. Cluster 14 khettaras total 28 km underground gallery (0.8×1.5 m) with 420 shafts 8–28 m deep every 10 m, tapping Atlas alluvial fan aquifer, feeding 650 ha seven-ksar oasis (Zenaga palm belt). Gallery in conglomerate with shaft collars of dry-stone; surface seguia 6 km with 7 water-clock dividers (tanast). Still operating heritage: 9 khettaras active 2022, three 14th c. Merinid. Figuig khettara law (Orf) governs day/night shares; 1994 Morocco inventory.
