About Kizil Central Cave — Kuqa Muzat River Diamond Pattern Sanctuary
Central gorge caves 30–80 of Kizil's 339 caves on the Muzat River north bank 65 km east of Kuqa, ancient Kucha capital of Tocharian Buddhism. Central Cave 38 with diamond-pattern vaulted ceiling and 3.2 m Buddha assembly reflects 3rd–8th century Gandhara–Sogdian synthesis predating Dunhuang 366. Overpainted with lapis lazuli. German Turfan expeditions 1906–14 removed many murals to Berlin.
Why it mattersEarliest large Buddhist cave group in China predating Dunhuang, proving Kucha Tocharian diffusion
