About Mansar
Mansar is a 5th–6th century Vakataka–Gupta complex near Nagpur, where ASI (1997–2000 Joshi, Sharma) uncovered the palace of Pravarasena II (c.420 CE) — a 38×38 m enclosure with lime-plastered brick walls — plus the Hidimba Tekdi temple (Shiva–Vishnu syncretic), a stupa-chaitya, and a massive 170×40 m reservoir with laterite dams. At 340 m on the Wainganga piedmont of the Deccan trap, the site shows Vakataka brick metropolis coeval with Ajanta, with Roman amphora sherds and gold Vakataka coins. Deccan College's reservoir lidar proves Vakataka hydraulic engineering predated the Nag River dam.
Why it mattersOnly Vakataka palace excavated, linking Ajanta murals to contemporary Deccan urbanism and hydraulic engineering.
