About

About Marcahuamachuco — Castillo Pyramid Fortress (La Libertad Highlands, Peru)

Vast 240-ha hilltop capital of Huamachuco culture (350–800 CE) eclipsing Wari north, built on 3595 m mesa dominating Carabamba plateau. Castillo is its colossal terraced pyramid-fortress: 70 m-long curving stone ramparts 10–12 m high forming D-shaped multi-storey gallery fortress with internal party walls, over earlier pyramid podium (20x40 m). Below lies Cerro Sazón palace and Wiracochapampa Wari town. Monumental galleries 5 m high contain niches, passages, ventilators; defeat by Inca later. John Topic excavations 1968–.

Why it mattersLargest highland fortress north of Wari; documents north Andean state independent of Wari–Tiwanaku axis.
