About Nahr Al-Kabir Canal (Orontes Coastal Canal, Nahr al-Kabir al-Janoubi)
Coastal plain canalized reach of Nahr al-Kabir al-Janoubi (Great South River) 18 km south of Latakia (12 m), Syria–Lebanon border river. Historic canalization 3.2 km reach with Roman–Byzantine cut 4.5 m wide, 2.8 m deep limestone channel with overflow levees 1.2 m, diverting spring-fed perennial flow to 320 ha coastal citrus/olive plain and Latakia southern suburb cisterns. Intake is Roman spring-house 3×4 m at coastal spring 35.31N; outlet to Mediterranean via Tell Sukas lagoon 2 km. Can be partly tunnel 180 m under coastal ridge. Dated Roman 2nd c. CE with Byzantine 6th c. repair (Justinian inscription).
Why it mattersOnly Roman canalized coastal river reach on Levantine coast — Latakia hinterland model.
