About
About Haluza (Elusa) Negev Kite Field (Haluza dunes fringe, Israel)
Westernmost Negev kite cluster on loess–dune edge above Haluza (Byzantine Elusa) oasis town ruins: BGU 1998–2015 mapped 11 kites and 9 'sinking circles' (5-m pits) staggered between stabilized dunes and Besor gravel terraces. Kites are 80–170 m arms with kite-head cells 8–14 m, chronotyped Early Bronze (3300–2600 BCE) via EB II Arad ceramics inside cells, but re-cut Iron II–Byzantine as catchment enclosures for Haluza's Nabatean–Byzantine desert farming. Demonstrates the longest kite reuse over 4,000 years, from gazelle trap to Byzantine runoff harvest. Dune migration buried 3 kites since 2005.
Why it mattersLongest kite-reuse sequence, linking Bronze hunting to Byzantine desert agriculture.
