About
About Nevasa Pravara Valley Site
Nevasa Pravara Valley Site — Deccan Stone Age to Chalcolithic reference sequence (Lower Paleolithic Acheulian Chirki → Middle Paleolithic → Jorwe Chalcolithic 1400–700 BCE) on Pravara River, excavated 1954–61 by H.D. Sankalia (Deccan College). Nevasa defined Deccan prehistory: Acheulian handaxes at Chirki (3 km downstream, 350 ka), Nevase Jorwe Chalcolithic with Malwa and Early Jorwe phases, painted Jorwe ware (Black-on-Red), microliths, and early agriculture. 12 m colluvial stratigraphy is Deccan plateau's only continuous Pleistocene–Holocene sequence linking Paleolithic to Early Historic Indo-Roman trade gap.
Why it mattersDeccan prehistory type-site — only continuous Acheulian→Jorwe sequence with Indo-Roman trade hiatus gap
