About
About Patrai — Strait Emporium Submerged (Kerch Strait Taman Shore)
Patrai (Patraeus), late 6th c. BCE Greek emporium on Taman north spit commanding Kerch Strait narrows opposite Myrmekion, controlling Bosporus passage. Lower harbour and strand now 1.5–4 m submerged under strait waters after Taman Bay spit migration and storm breaching; intact ashlar quay, mole and street insula mapped by TAMAN underwater survey 2000s. Excavated 1950s–2010s by Blavatsky and Paromov: Attic pottery, Bosporan amphora stamps, defensive wall. Abandoned 3rd c. CE after Boranoi raid. Distinct from Patrai Achaia.
Why it mattersOnly Taman spit strait-control emporium opposite Kerch — customs stamps prove Bosporan toll system; submerged spit stratigraphy marks Kerch Strait sea-level history and Kuban delta evolution.
