About Patrai — Achilleion Cape Anchorage off Taman
Western cape anchorage of Patrai off Achilleion Cape, site of Achilles' shrine (Achilleion) where Bosporan sailors sacrificed before crossing the strait, now 5–8 m underwater due to cliff retreat. The anchorage is a natural bay enhanced with a 28-m rubble jetty at 4 m depth and a rock-cut shrine platform 6 × 4 m with a votive deposit (500+ arrowheads, Achilles icon pins) at 6 m. The bay's reef carries 9 mooring cuttings and a scatter of pan-Bosporan votives (Archaic–Hellenistic).
Post-Classical cliff collapse (1st c. CE earthquake) submerged the shrine platform, sealing votives under rockfall. Strabo (Geogr. 06) describes Achilleion as vantage for strait tolls, matching Patrai's customs role.
Why it mattersOnly Bosporan Achilles-shrine harbour preserved underwater; votive arrowheads quantify cult intensity; Patrai toll–Achilleion ritual pairing.
