About
About Paunar
Paunar is ancient Pravarapura, the 5th-century Vakataka capital founded by Pravarasena II after Mansar, a 40-ha fortified mound (700×600 m) on the Dham River terrace with 8-m-high brick rampart and moat. Excavated by Deo (1966–69), it shows Vakataka planned grid (N–S avenues), brick fort, Vishnu temple (later Jalalpura Dargah), and Indo-Roman amphorae (50 CE horizon). At 280 m Wardha valley, Deccan College's magnetometry reveals a 2-km suburban spread with tank bunds. Copper plates found at Paunar read 'Pravarapura' confirming the toponym—the type-site for Vakataka urbanism.
Why it mattersDefinitive Pravarapura identification via copper plate—only Vakataka planned capital with grid.
