Paykend — Sogdian–Islamic Silk Road city of merchants (4th c BCE–11th c CE) 50 km west Bukhara, excavated 1910s–2000s Semenov and Naymark. Paykend was City of Merchants per Narshakhi, with 150-ha walled shahristan, citadel 200×200 m, Sogdian–Sasanian bazaar street with shops, early mosque (8th c) and Zoroastrian fire temple, caravan serai and fort. Narshakhi says 1000 dirham daily customs. Sogdian–Arab–Samanid ceramics, Chinese coins, and Sasanian drahms. Abandoned 11th c after Zeravshan channel dried.
