About
About Sarmishsay Upper Terrace Petroglyphs
Upper terrace 80 m above the Sarmishsay streambed, on the north wall of the 2.5-km gorge in Karatau, with 400+ petroglyphs on dark sandstone: Bronze (c.2000 BCE) ibex and Bactrian camel caravans, Iron Age archers, and Early Medieval Turkic goat-ibex hunts (c.600–800 CE). Unlike the congested lower gorge (4000 petroglyphs), upper terrace is a 300-m bench with outlier panels including the sole Kufic Arabic inscription in the gorge (9th c.) associated with a small mosque footing, documenting Islamic re-sanctification of the Bronze gorge. Three stone alignments interpreted as falcon traps lie on the plateau above.
Why it mattersUpper quiet terrace documenting Zarafshan caravan evolution Bronze→Sogdian→Islamic, with only Kufic inscription in gorge.
