About
About Temple of Apollo Smintheus at Gülpınar (Chryse)
The only temple dedicated to Apollo Smintheus (Mouse Apollo) — Homer's Iliad (1.39) deity who smites and protects from plague mice — set on a low hill before Gülpınar village at the north Troad foothills. Rebuilt c.150 BCE Ionic pseudodipteral (8×14, 23×44 m) over an earlier Archaic foundation, it is famed for its epic figural friezes wrapping the cella interior: Iliad scenes with Achilles, Hector and mouse-masked figures, a unique program linking Homeric epic to local cult. Scamander valley marble, 9 columns restored, temenos enclosure and Sacred Way to Chryse visible. Excavated continuously since 1980 by Coşkun Özgünel (Ankara University).
Why it mattersOnly Smintheus sanctuary linking Homeric text to archaeology; rare interior frieze prog narrative.
