Fortified Late Classic–Postclassic Maya capital (300–1200 CE, fortification 900–1200) crowning limestone hilltop 250 m above Comitán valley: 60+ structures, walled core (60 ha) with 4.5-m-thick dry-stone defensive walls and bastions enclosing 3 ballcourts, 7 temple pyramids and main acropolis 20 m high. Longest pre-Columbian fortified walls in Maya area; INAH (Enrique Hernández, 1990s) documented dry-stone masonry without mortar, watchtowers and Postclassic Tojolabal reoccupation. Commands view of entire Comitán basin.
Why it mattersBest-preserved fortified Maya city outside Yucatán; evidence for militarization after Classic collapse in Chiapas highlands; dry-stone engineering analogue to hillforts.
