3.4 km medieval ring wall encircling Hanseatic Visby, best preserved in Scandinavia, built 13th–14th c. limestone with 27 towers, gate towers and caponier. UNESCO World Heritage 1995 Hansa Town of Visby preserves 200+ medieval stone houses and 10 ruined churches inside wall. First wall c.1150, stone curtain c.1250, heightening after civil war 1288 between Visby burghers and Gotland land commune. Wall still 11 m high in sections.
