Wadi Halfa is the submerged 1902–1964 port and fort at Second Cataract, predecessor to modern town now under Lake Nasser (moved 1964 UNESCO rescue). Ancient Middle Kingdom fortresses Buhen and Mirgissa now under lake 10 km W; Wadi Halfa was entrepôt for Nubian trade since 1800 BCE. Precinct includes Middle Kingdom fort Buhen north of Wadi Halfa (2.5 ha, walls 5 m) now island? Actually Buhen 21.92N 31.29E under lake partially exposed seasonally. Wadi Halfa railway 1899. Nubian Nubian monuments rescue 1960s.
