About Dholavira Castle Mound — Khadirbet
Dholavira (Khadirbet) is the most spectacular Harappan city (100 ha) on Khadir island in the Great Rann of Kutch, excavated by R.S. Bisht 1989–2005. Tripartite plan: Castle (citadel) mound — outer 150×118 m and inner 114×92 m, 15 m high — plus Bailey and Lower Town, all walled with massive stone and mudbrick. Sixteen rock-cut reservoirs with drains demonstrate hydraulic mastery; a 10-letter Harappan signboard and stadium. UNESCO World Heritage 2021. Five stages 2650–1450 BCE show continuous Indus urbanism in arid environment.
Why it mattersKey Indus Valley (Harappan, Sorath Harappan) mound/pyramid informing urbanism and monumentality debate; long stratigraphy anchors regional chronology; type-site for local ceramic sequence.
